Let them come to you with their concerns. If you have a busy schedule, try and find an hour or two when you can handle interruptions. Make sure your employees know that they should feel comfortable approaching you with any concerns or questions during these hours.
Always be clear. It doesn’t matter how good your workers are if you aren’t communicating your ideas efficiently. Be sure to explain your goals and any deadlines that need to be reached. Make sure that your workers understand what you expect from them, and be available to answer any questions they might have. Being a great leader is a lot more than dishing out orders. One of the most important parts of being a great leader is developing a trust between yourself and your team. If you want your team to give you the best work possible, treat them with the same respect you demand.
Avoid showing favoritism for certain employee’s ideas and suggestions. Show each group member the same level of interest, respect and keep an open mind. Treat your team the way you would expect to be treated yourself. Do your best to be fair and then follow through on your word. Be strong and decisive as a leader. You’re the boss, so you will have to make many decisions. If people feel differently about what a solution should be, you have to be the one to make the decision that will help everyone instead of just some. A good leader should be friendly and accessible to employees. You can run a successful business without using your authority to intimidate people. If your employees are afraid of you, they are unlikely to report honest mistakes making it difficult for you to manage them effectively. Be friendly but don’t try to make friends with your employees.
You can learn a lot about leadership at your local bookstore or public library. Look for the biography books and pick out books on good leaders that you think were great. Choose someone and begin to gain knowledge from their experience. Great leaders are inspirational and they welcome creativity. When you’re using creative thinking and taking risks, you can have a greater outcome. Go down the path less traveled sometimes. Have faith in new concepts, even if they are not needed at this time. Allow ample opportunity for your employees to offer feedback and new ideas. Although group meetings are the ideal setting for exchange of information, some employees may not feel confident offering opinions in such a public forum. Work with employees individually as well.
